Wales hopes of making a significant impression on the Rugby World Cup later this year have taken a significant hit after news emerged this morning that centre Jonathan Davies has been ruled out for the rest of the year.

The 27 year old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Clermont against Montpellier at the weekend and will be forced to undergo surgery later this week.

Wales boss Warren Gatland has reacted to the news with understandable disappointment.

It’s a disappointment for Jonathan and for us, but the advice is for him to have the surgery straight away.

Obviously the injury rules him out of the 2015 Rugby World Cup but our focus is his long term career and we will be working closely with him during his recovery looking towards the 2016 RBS 6 Nations.

The 27 year old's absence will make Wales' chances of emerging from a group containing Australia, England, Fiji and Uruguay that bit more difficult.
