Munster have confirmed the signing of New Zealand scrum-half Alby Mathewson on a short-term deal.

The 32-year-old will join the province to provide cover for Conor Murray, who has been ruled out of this weekend's Guinness Pro14 opener due to a neck injury.

It is as of yet unknown whether Murray will require surgery, as he continues to manage the issue.

Mathewson spent last season at Toulon and has enjoyed a coloured career in both the northern and southern hemisphere. He has played for New Zealand five times and played against Munster in November 2008 and with Toulon earlier this year.

James Hart, Duncan Williams and Neil Cronin are all currently at the club and can play out-half but Johann van Graan has still elected to sign Mathewson on a four-month deal.
