It will be a dangerous new era for Munster Rugby next season when they undergo major changes. The announcement of the newly created Director of Rugby position should aid Anthony Foley in his job as head coach, and could give Munster a new direction going forward.

But that post hasn't been filled. Yet. Names like Declan Kidney and departing Crusaders head coach Todd Blackadder are being linked with the role, but there is a leading contender emerging.

According to Ruaidhri O'Connor, former Springbok captain Johan 'Rassie' Erasmus has been in contact with Munster officials about the role.

The 36-times capped Springbok has an extensive post-career CV. He was the first head coach of the newly created Cheetahs in 2006, and has been the South African rugby's general manager of high performance - a post he has held since early 2015. Erasmus announced in March that he was leaving the role because he was fed up of the politics in South African rugby, and wants to pursue a coaching career outside of his homeland.

It is rumoured that he was a candidate to replace Heineke Meyer as the Springbok coach, and now he has offers from Japan and Europe for his services.
