The hopes and dreams of every Irish rugby fan look like they might just be realised after reports are suggesting that Joe Schmidt is closer than ever to signing a contract extension with the IRFU to continue his role with the Irish team until the 2019 World Cup.

The Kiwi's current contract expires next summer and he has been heavily linked with a return to New Zealand, with the Chiefs and the Highlanders both understood to have made overtures for the former Leinster boss.

As per Chris Foy, rugby correspondant for the Daily Mail, it seems like Schmidt might just be sticking around until the World Cup in Japan in 2019 - which would be a colossal boost for Irish rugby.

Schmidt's influence with both Leinster and Ireland has been remarkable. He oversaw the most successful period in Leinster's modern history winning two Heineken Cups, a PRO 12 and a European Challenge Cup and transformed the province into European rugby's most respected team.

His remarkable record of success continued when he assumed control of the Irish national team in 2013, debuting with a victory over Samoa, a loss to Australia and THAT incredible match against the All Black inside the Aviva Stadium.

Schmidt's reputation enhanced considerably when he won the 6 Nations in his first two attempts and, while the Irish efforts flattered to deceive in last year's World Cup, you feel that the New Zealander has more to achieve with Ireland.
