Today in Limerick, we witnessed scenes unlike any we'd seen in a long time on an Irish sporting field. Munster vs Glasgow was simultaneously an intriguing Champions Cup fixture, a sombre open-air wake for the great Anthony Foley and a resurrection of the dormant spirit of Munster rugby.
The sounds and images of Anthony Foley's sons completing the circle of Munster players in the centre of Thomond, singing 'Stand Up And Fight', will live in the memory forever. But the incredible seven or eight minutes that proceeded the final whistle were also impeccably captured on RTE Radio 1. Michael Corcoran, Des Cahill, Donal Lenihan and Denis Hurley fought back the sheer emotive force of what was happening around them to describe the scenes. And when they chose to be silent, it was even more powerful.
We hear not only the rousing SUAF, but a powerful version of the Fields.
It was an afternoon to remember.
