Scottish rugby player Stuart Hogg released a statement this weekend hitting out at those who criticise his physical appearance and perceived vanity.

Uploaded to Instagram, the 30-year-old vented his frustration that his appearance has apparently taken over his ability to play rugby according to fans.

Ok I get it. I find it incredibly frustrating and annoying that my appearance has somehow taken over my ability to play rugby according to ‘fans’ of the game.

My hair. My teeth. My f***ing choice with what I do. No matter how many times it's heckled, written, commentated on, I will continue to be me. Why? Because I've every f***ing right to.

I have a man bun. I have had dental treatment. Give over it's old news. Find something more interesting to do with your lives.

Frequently Criticised

Ever since being made captain ahead of Scotland's Six Nations campaign in 2020, Hogg has faced renewed criticism online for his grooming choices. The fullback was once again on the receiving end of jokes about his appearance during Scotland's Autumn Series game against Fiji.

Hogg's statement comes after a difficult year for the 30-year-old. Before the commencement of the Autumn Series it was announced that Hogg will no longer be the captain of Scotland rugby. Instead, Edinburgh back row Jamie Ritchie will captain the side this month.

Earlier this year during the Six Nations Campaign, Hogg and his teammates got into controversy after breaching team orders and going on a night out after their win over Italy.

Daunting Task Up Next

On the day of the statement being released, Hogg and his teammates enjoyed a 28-12 win over Fiji. Next up for Scotland is a daunting visit by the All Blacks this Sunday to Murrayfield. A game against Argentina is on the following weekend in a tough Autumn Series for the side.
