While rugby already has a massive following in many parts of the world, it is likely that the sport will welcome a whole new generation of supporters over the next couple of years.

The game has been growing steadily throughout the professional era, but now Netflix are likely to give it a push into a different demographic.

The streaming giant will be producing a new documentary series based around the Six Nations, a product that will be very much akin to their smash hit Formula 1 show Drive To Survive. That show has resulted in the popularity of the motorsport exploding, going from a previously diminishing brand to one of the most popular sporting products on the planet.

It will be hoped that it could have a similar effect on rugby, with the show to be filmed during this year's tournament.

Of course, what makes Drive To Survive so popular is the personalities that the show is based around. There are no shortage of interesting characters involved in the various F1 teams, be it in the form of drivers or team principals.

If the rugby version is to experience anywhere near the same level of success, it will require buy-in from some of the game's biggest stars.

Tadhg Furlong would certainly fall into that category, although it seems like he is yet to be convinced by the venture, believing that giving cameras full access to teams wouldn't really work.

We know it’s happening, but apart from that, I don’t have much idea of what on the ground looks like or how much access is involved in it.

We’ve done it on Lions tours, with cameras being around. The only danger with cameras is that you still want lads to be themselves and not have the cameras affect what goes on.

I’m not sure how much rugby IP (intellectual property) I’d like to leak from the group, for normal reasons.

I don’t know the full ins and outs of it. I couldn’t imagine it would be full open-door, I don’t see how that would work...

You don’t see them talking about engineering, you don’t see them talking about little pieces they put on their cars, and why they did it this way.

I’m saying that in ‘Drive to Survive’, what do any of us know about F1?

Look, I don’t know. I haven’t talked much to the lads about it or anything like that. I know (Max) Verstappen knocked it out, he doesn’t fancy it.

Furlong would certainly be a very interesting character to have as one of the main personalities in the show, although he seems very reluctant to put himself in front of the camera.

This was also the case in the first season of Drive To Survive, where many of the sport's most popular teams and drivers opted against taking part. However, they changed their mind after seeing the success that the show experienced.

Perhaps something similar will happen with the rugby edition.
