Few countries (if any) are as unilaterally linked with one sport like New Zealand and rugby; let alone setting the standard of excellence for the rest of the world to follow.
When it was announced that Ireland's Ronan O'Gara would join the coaching staff of New Zealand side Crusaders from France's Racing, it was unique in so far as this is a country that rarely looks beyond it's own shores in it's search for talent.
On TG4 tonight (23:50), fans of rugby and sport generally have a chance to watch an incredible documentary charting the importance of rugby on a very local level in this far off Pacific Island.
The Ground We Won explores a "study of manhood as observed through the rites and rituals of a rural New Zealand rugby club."
Focusing on the "bawdiness and camaraderie [of] an eclectic rugby team of farmers strive to redeem themselves from a long run of bitter losses."
Channeling themes of close-knit communities, sport and the difficulties that come with satisfying the demands of "real" life and sporting endeavour, The Ground We Won will certainly resonate with many Irish fans of a GAA persuasion - to say the least.
Redolent of the many behind-the-scenes short films that have emerged from within the GAA in recent years, The Ground We Won promises a similar intimacy:
With incredibly privileged access inside this sacred men's zone, the film captures a fascinating season of traditions, debauchery and friendship, as the men reclaim their faith in themselves.
Certainly one to watch this season, TG4 look set to continue their excellent sports coverage.
