Dan Carter's second stint in the Top 14 has been much more successful than his first.

In 2008, he joined Perpignan on a six-month deal. He would play just five games for the side before a ruptured Achilles tendon ruled him out for the remainder of his contract.

Carter has been key for this season for a Racing Metro side who lead the Top 14. Part of their success has been defence - one of the best in French rugby's top tier. The Racing defence coach is none other than Ronan O'Gara.

Speaking on the Ray D'Arcy Show on Friday, Carter joked regarding his surprise with O'Gara's current role.

He’s kicking and defence coach - who’d have thought!

When we were playing Ireland we used to attack his No 10 channel and now he’s my defensive coach!

That’s a huge dig and I apologise – he’s the one picking the team now so I need to keep playing.

Jokes aside - Carter was full of praise for what O'Gara brings to the Racing Metro coaching team.

He’s brought a lot to the team, he has a huge drive and passion for the game, a lot of knowledge, and he’s getting the most out of players.

He’s still early in his coaching career but I think he has a bright future ahead of him.
