That the Champions Cup semi-finals are on this weekend will no doubt come as news to many people in this country, who abruptly lost interest once the Irish team exited.

More on the lack of Irish interest in the Champions Cup here.

More surprisingly, interest across the water appears slack.

The English clubs were the most aggressive advocates for the reform and reorganisation of the Heineken Cup at the tail end of 2013.

There has been no English winner of the European competition since Wasps in 2007. Emboldened by changes to the salary cap and the changed qualification criteria, the Premiership clubs have returned as top dogs for the first time since the early 2000s. Three of the four semi-finalists are English clubs.

However, for all that, the comp has failed to capture the imagination.

The London Times reported that a 'poor turnout' was anticipated for the semi-finals. The Madejski Stadium, which hosts Sunday's semi-final between Leicester and Racing 92, only holds a capacity of 30,000 and yet more than a third of tickets remain unsold.

As for tomorrow's Wasps-Saracens match in Nottingham, only 17, 000 of 24,000 tickets have been sold.

It will mark the lowest aggregate attendance for the European semi-finals in a decade. One has to go back to 2001, when Munster lost narrowly in Stade Francais, to find a lower combined attendance in the last four.

The ECHR insist tickets are still selling and at that 17,000 is in line with expectations for an all-English semi-final.
