New franchise Moana Pasifika won their first ever game in Super Rugby pacific Friday morning as a sensational solo try by Danny Toala gave them a Golden Point victory over the Hurricanes.
Moana Pasifika were tough opposition to the Hurricanes side boasting the likes of Jordie Barrett and TJ Perenara. They came back late on to draw the game 19-19 in normal time and the Golden Point rule was needed to decide the winner.
Golden Point was brought in 2020 during Super Rugby Aoteroa and it's similar to the NFL overtime or the old Golden Goal which was used in football during the late 90's and early 00's. The way it works in Super Rugby is that there's two periods of 5 minutes played if a match is drawn after normal time. The first team to score wins the game there and then. It leads to some exciting drama which we saw yesterday.
Moana Pasifika Golden Point Try
The Hurricanes were holding onto the ball, trying to create space for a drop-goal or win a penalty but after 13 phases Moana Pasifika turned the ball over and substitute Danny Toala launched the ball down the field. He was able to get to the ball again, kicked it a second and was able to gather and score a try to give Moan Pasfika their first Super Rugby Pacific win.

New teams Moana Pasifika and Fiji Drua have been a breath of fresh air to Super Rugby, both sides have now won matches and play some of the exciting Pacific Island rugby we all know and love.
The calendar for Moana is very hectic now as they have five games in three weeks due to a Covid outbreak delaying the start to their season. Hopefully there will be more great days to come for them.
