Serena Williams today announced that she is expecting her first child, informing the world of the news via the medium of Snapchat.  She deleted the snap within thirty minutes of it being posted.

Assuming that the '20 weeks' caption refers to how far into the pregnancy she is, then it would mean that, remarkably, Williams won the Australian Open while eight weeks pregnant. Williams did not drop a set in the final, defeating her sister Venus 6-4, 6-4 to seal a 23rd Grand Slam title, eclipsing Steffi Graf's record in the process. That result meant she reclaimed her status as World Number 1, although her being inactive since that win means she has slipped back down to World No.2. Williams has pulled out of recent tournaments citing a knee injury.

This is not the first major personal news Williams has announced via social media: her recent marriage to reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, the news first being made public on that very site.
