As usual you'll have to wait until 9 o'clock to find any decent films on TV tonight, but then along comes a fine selection for the rest of the evening. There's a bit of everything available, depending on what you're in the mood for, except maybe for a good comedy. If you're planning a night in front of the box, but are slightly daunted by starting that new series, one of these might do nicely.

As usual, all of these films are available on non subscription channels, though may not be on all platforms.

Films on TV tonight:

Layer Cake: Sony Movie Channel (Sky 321), 9.00PM

Year: 2004

Cast: Daniel Craig, Sienna Miller, Tom Hardy, Colm Meaney, Michael Gambon

Plot: A successful cocaine dealer gets two tough assignments from his boss on the eve of his planned early retirement. (IMDB)

Rating: 80% (Rotten Tomatoes)

The successor to Lock Stock and Snatch, Layer Cake is darker and more serious, darker and probably better journey into the world of British gangland. It's also the film that launches Daniel Craig into the stardom that would make him James Bond.

Demolition Man: TCM (Virgin 327, Sky 315), 9.00PM

Year: 1993

Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock

Plot: A police officer is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent nemesis who is loose in a non-violent future society. (IMDB)

Rating: 62% (Rotten Tomatoes)

A futuristic action movie (2032, hilariously) as former bad guy Stallone is released to take on even worse guy Snipes. A terribly bad film that's a lot of fun.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation: Film Four, 9.00PM

Year: 2015

Cast: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg

Plot: Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate - an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF. (IMDB)

Rating: 93% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Recommended

Probably the best Mission: Impossible and hugely popular. There are fantastic action sequences throughout with lunatic Cruise doing his own stunts.

Man Of Steel: Sky One, 9.00PM

Year: 2013

Cast: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe

Plot: An alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened, when survivors of his home planet invade Earth. (IMDB)

Rating: 56% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Another Superman reboot which launched the DC Universe series of films. A film that rightly received mixed reviews but has its moments, and if you want to use the lockdown to catch up on this ever improving series of films, tonight is the best way to start.

The Krays: ITV4 (Virgin 132, Sky Extra Channels), 10.00PM

Year: 1990

Cast: Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Billie Whitelaw, Tom Bell

Plot: This fact-based movie follows the life of the twin crime-lords in London's '60s underworld. (IMDB)

Rating: 87% (Rotten Tomatoes)

The Kemp brothers as Ronnie and Reggie Kray, the two notorious gangsters of the 1960s hits the mark and still stands up thirty years later.

Full Metal Jacket: TCM, 11.30PM

Year: 1987

Cast: Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofio

Plot: A pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue. (IMDB)

Rating: 91% (Rotten Tomatoes)

A Stanley Kubrick Vietnam classic, it's a film that's basically in two distinct parts, following the training of soldiers and later their time at war. The insane drill instructor would go down as an iconic movie character.
