This 2023 limited series written by Julian Pörksen and Isabel Kleefeld is another foreign language drama series that has had an impactful impression on Irish viewers.

Be warned, however the German thriller/drama series is not for the faint-hearted. The gritty and suspenseful drama begins how most end with the main character, a woman fleeing from the woods, before being struck by a car and hospitalised.

She wakes up shortly after with her daughter Hannah, with no memory of what has happened except for the memory that she had been kidnapped, raped, abused and held captive.

The third season just premiered on Netflix last week which will see Cavill play Heralt for the last time before exits the show.

There is no need to worry about starting a show that is about to lose its main character as it has already been revealed Liam Hemsworth will take Cavill's role as the main character in the hotly anticipated season four which has already started production.

4. Black Mirror

Cast: Annie Murphy as Joan, Salma Hayek Pinault, Kate Mara, Aaron Paul

Rating: 83% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Black Mirror first appeared on our screens in 2011 and since then it has amassed a huge following. The series has received critical acclaim and is considered by many reviewers to be one of the best TV series of the past ten years.

The show is a British anthology TV Series created by Charlie Brooker, which explores a diversity of genres in each episode.

Most episodes are however set in near-future dystopias with sci-fi technology, that feature stand-alone dramas, which are full of sharp, suspenseful, satirical tales that explore techno-paranoia.

It is definitely worth watching the six seasons and it is currently one of the best series on Netflix right now.

5. Peaky Blinders

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson

Rating: 92% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Peaky Blinders is easily one of the best TV shows of all time and I'm glad it has gotten the recognition it deserves in recent years. This dark, gritty period crime drama follows the Shelby crime family in Birmingham directly after World War One. As the Shelbys build their empire, the stakes continue to get higher and higher.

The Brummie criminals even find themselves heavily involved in politics. The show has an incredible cast, an even better cast and powerful roles, both male and female. Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby is one of the most iconic embodiments of a character. He stays in your head long after you're finished watching the show. All five seasons are on Netflix so you must go watch them all right now. By order of the Peaky Blinders.

6. Squid Game

Cast: Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Oh Young-soo, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-Yeon

Recommended

Rating: 93% (Rotten Tomatoes)

A mix of drama and game show, Squid Game is one of the most popular shows in Netflix's history. Hundreds of civilians are taken in for a TV show.

They then play a succession of children's games for a handsome amount of money for the winners. However, there is major punishments for those who fail to win the games.

The show is in Korean so there is subtitles but there is a lot of hype around it and has received a lot of positive reviews. A second season is in the works.

7. The Queen's Gambit

Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Chloe Pirrie, Bill Camp

Rating: 96% (Rotten Tomatoes)

One of the biggest hits of 2020, The Queen's Gambit has been a hugely popular watch in recent times. While a series based around competitive chess players may not sound like the most thrilling of watches, there is far more to this one. Google describes it as:

Set during the Cold War era, orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world.

8. Bridgerton

Cast: Nicola Coughlan, Julie Andrews, Luke Newton, Luke Thompson, Ruth Gemmell, Phoebe Dynevor

Rating: 82% (Rotten Tomatoes)

One of the best series on Netflix currently, this hit period drama series follows the story of eight close-knit siblings of the Bridgerton family as they look for love and happiness in London's high society.

Each season focuses on a particular sibling. Season one revolved around eldest daughter Daphne as she made her debut into society in search of finding an eligible husband.

Hoping to follow in her parent's footsteps and marry for true love and respect, Daphne initially struggles to find eligible suitors who meet what it is her heart truly desires, which is well documented by the high society gossiper and mysterious Lady Whistledown (Julie Andrews) who writes about the drama in her weekly published leaflet.

Daphne soon meets her match, when the highly desirable and string-minded Duke of Hastings returns to the ton, sworn to himself that he would never marry or produce an heir to the Hastings name.

He soon finds himself striking a deal with the beautiful Daphne who agrees to pretend court the Duke, so she retains her status as the most sought-after lady.

Despite proclaiming that they want nothing the other has to offer, their attraction is undeniable and sparks fly as they find themselves trying to resist their attraction and feelings for one another.

9. Money Heist

Cast: Ursula Corbero, Alvaro Morte, Itziar Ituno

Rating: 92% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Undoubtedly one of the most popular shows on Netflix.

Originally produced for Spanish TV for the first two 'parts', Netflix would buy the rights of this thrilling story to continue the story. It tells the tale of a sophisticated group of thieves who have come up with a complicated plan to steal over €2billion from the Spanish mint.

Of course, their plan doesn't exactly work out as they planned, with the authorities, hostages, and sights within the group often throwing the whole thing into chaos.

10. Ozark

Cast: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner

Rating: 81% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Jason Bateman can act. After a career of a lot of comedy roles (Michael Bluth in Arrested Development is the most iconic), it's tough to imagine him in a truly serious role. But there aren't many roles more serious than Marty Byrde in Ozark. it is one of the best series on Netflix to bing-watch.

The financial advisor and father of two is forced to relocate his family from a Chicago suburb to the Ozarks in Missouri. This comes after a money-laundering scheme goes wrong, forcing him to pay back a debt to the Mexican drug cartel to protect his family. Soon Marty realises that laundering money in the Ozarks won't be as easy as he thought.

Ozark is gripping, dark and suspenseful. The list of antagonists is endless but the plots and subplots come together in a cohesive masterpiece that is reminiscent of Breaking Bad. The show also boasts incredibly powerful female characters that outshine their male counterparts most of the time. If you haven't seen Ozark, what are you doing?

11. Community

Cast: Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Joel McHale

Rating: 88% (Rotten Tomatoes)

An arrogant lawyer gets a reality check when his law degree is revoked and he's forced to return to studying at a community college. Here, he reluctantly befriends a dysfunctional crew of misfits that he meets in a group-study.

An unlikely family dynamic begins to evolve. The innovative thing about this show is its meta style and use of callbacks.

The Dan Harmon sitcom-satire also seamlessly develops the characters through their quirky interactions and encounters.

At its core, it's a heartwarming tale of friendship and family that aims to make fun of the traditional sitcom structure. All six seasons are on Netflix and it's an extremely easy watch, definitely one of the best series on Netflix.

12. Sex Education

Cast: Emma Mackey, Asa Butterfield, Ncuti Gatwa

Rating: 96% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Sex Education is a weird one. It has the feel of an American high school movie but it's based in the UK and it's filmed in Wales.

The aesthetic, clothes and cars in the show make it look like it's based in the 80s but the characters all knock about with smartphones so that wouldn't make sense. This jumbled up reality works though and it's a delight to watch.

The show follows Asa Butterfield's Otis as he starts giving out advice on sex and relationships in his school in return for money. He doesn't have any experience in this department himself but realises he knows enough from living with his mother who is a sex therapist.

While being quite hilarious in dealing with the topic of sex, Sex Education also touches on the different aspects of intimacy, relationships and sexuality in a very clever way that is, in essence, educational.

It is definitely one of the best series on Netflix to binge-watch.

13. At Home With The Fury's

Cast: Tyson Fury, Paris Fury, Tommy Fury, Molly Mae

Rating: 77% (Rotten Tomatoes)

This Netflix original follows heavyweight champion Tyson Fury as he exits the ring and tries to embrace retirement with his family including his wife, Paris, father, John, and his six children.

The reality show highlights the highs and lows of Tyson Fury's life including his battle with depression and bi-polar disorder as well his impulsive behaviour.

There are countless laugh-out-loud moments which strongly contrast the grim themes of the show. This is definitely one of the best series on Netflix rigth now.

That's our list of the best series on Netflix to watch right now. Did we leave any out that definitely should be on the list? Let us know.
