Here at Balls.ie, we've talked before about League of Ireland crossovers into pop culture.
Well, now there's a new entry into that realm, and it comes from For Those I Love, aka David Balfe.
Balfe gave a stirring performance of his song 'I Have a Love', written as an ode to his best friend who passed away, Paul Curran.
Both Balfe and Curran were bandmates in Burnt Out, a multi-faceted rock-leaning insight into working class Dublin and estate life. The band, with their striking visuals, left an indelible mark on Irish music during their brief run.
Balfe's one-man project is a tribute to Curran. In Balfe's own words:
As a creative who’s greatest relationships are those also tied to the art, much of my life has been self archived. The bedrock of this album is built upon samples of our whatsapp recordings, our interviews, our video footage and our old music. The question of why is scattered across not just the 9 songs, but the release itself.
Why share this album now? The truth is that at times, the art and each other is all we had.
Our identities so entrenched by what we created.
How else do you honour and thank an artist? But with the art itself.
For you, brother.
The self-titled album which 'I Have a Love' forms a part was released in 2019, although is set for a re-release.
The performance on Later with Jools Holland is driving and emotive, the stage direction works perfectly, with footage of Curran played on the wall behind Balfe.
It ends with Balfe standing stoically before his mic stand, unveiling a 'Coolock Reds' Shelbourne flag, an ode to the place they're from and the club they love.
