Tipping Point Contestant Unbelievably Confuses Homer Simpson With Greek Poet Homer

We've all done it before when watching a TV quiz from the comfort of our livings: heard a question and been so confident of the answer you said it straight away. Then on hearing the question again,  you realised you were wrong and that you were thinking of something completely different. It can be embarrassing. But imagine doing that on national TV with the world watching. Well that's what a contestant did on Tipping Point yesterday.

Host Ben Shepherd asked contestant Dom this question: “In his epic poems, Homer often refers to nectar as the drink of the gods and which other substance as their food?”  There's two quite famous Homer's who come to mind. One is an Ancient Greek author who wrote epic poems like The Iliad and The Odyssey. The other is a cartoon dad who can barely read, let alone write poems.

The question was clearly about the Greek poet Homer, but unfortunately Dom didn't hear it that way.

Ben Shepherd's Reaction to Tipping Point Howler

Dom may not have known the great Greek poet Homer, but he knew Homer Simpson likes doughnuts, and he rushed in with his doughnut answer. Shepherd couldn't hide his embarrassment for poor Dom. His mouth gaped open as he knew Dom was thinking of the wrong Homer.

Poor Dom even pauses as he confirms doughnuts is his answer, as he senses he on the verge of a quiz disaster.

What's worse is that Dom had the full support of a fellow Tipping Point contestant. In an extended clip from the episode, we can see Lindsey being asked what answer she would give. She - like Dom - said doughnuts, obviously thinking Dom was so confident that he had to be right.

When Ben read the question again Dom realised what he had done. D'oh! He knew he was wrong before the answer was given.

For those who wanted to know, the answer is ambrosia. Not the famous brand of custard, but according to Greek mythology, a dessert consisting of oranges and shredded coconut.

We would've said doughnuts too.
