Spoiler alert: this article contain information and discussion of today's Wordle answer: rupee

Wordle has proven to be a massively popular, though occasionally frustrating past time for lots of us. It's as true as ever today, as many were surprised to learn that rupee is a word.

Rupee, of course, is the currency of a number of countries in southeast Asia, such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

According to Dictionary.com, it is:

a cupronickel coin and monetary unit of India, Nepal, and Pakistan, equal to 100 paise.

The word rupee itself originates from Sanskrit can be traced back to the 16th century.

The word ‘Rupee’ has been derived from the Sanskrit word Rupyakam, meaning a silver coin. It owes its origin to Rupiya, issued by Sher Shah Suri in 1540-45. Today, the Reserve Bank of India issues currency under the RBI Act 1934.

The Cambridge dictionary cites this sentence for the usage of the word 'rupee':

"Porters absconding after an advance of wages were liable to a fine of 60 rupees, along with six months imprisonment and 25 lashes."

Rupee: Wordle player react

Today's wordle is proving frustrating simply because the word rupee is very rarely used in the USA and Europe.

Part of the reason today's world was so tricky is the repeating 'e' at the end of the word. There simply aren't many words that end in a double e and if you're not a currency trader or a native of India, you simply don't use the word very often.

Interestingly, one of the more popular incorrect guesses to today's wordle is a different currency very much in the news today: ruble. Both ruble and rupee have the same vowels as second and fifth letters. However, the wordle creators opted to avoid - again - linking the answer to geopolitical events.

Social media users shared their horror of trying to solve rupee this morning.
