5 Recent Friendly Results That Put Ireland's Loss To Belarus Into Perspective

After a loss to Belarus in Cork, there seems to be a bit of worry seeping into the minds of a number of Irish football fans.

On the one hand, it's understandable, as with matches against Sweden, Belgium, and Italy to come in the next three weeks we would have hoped to deal with Belarus fairly handily, but it was not to be.

There are a number of things that can explain that result, and the slightly underwhelming 1-1 draw with Holland, such as experimenting with players that are unlikely to start in France, as well as players who didn't make the squad, but really it just boils down to the fact that the players' main focus was not on the result, but on staying fit.

All that was needed for these games was a run-out and no injuries, so from that point of view they were a success, but while the results disappointed a few, we've picked out a few results from around Europe that suggest we needn't worry.

Germany 1 - 3 Slovakia

Despite taking just one point from the boys in green in qualifying thanks to the heroics of John O'Shea and Shane Long, Germany are tipped to go far in France this summer.

The reigning World Champs topped our qualifying group and have been able to omit Marco Reus from their squad due to injury concerns, yet they were spanked at home by Slovakia late last week.

Marek Hamsik's stunner was the highlight, but the Germans never fought back because there was no point, really.

Sweden 0 - 0 Slovenia

Ireland's opening opponents at Euro 2016 played host to the Slovenians, who will not be going to France, on Monday night, and it was absolutely dire.

Those worried about or lack of firepower against Holland and Belarus would feel a hell of a lot more comfortable after watching this match, but we honestly wouldn't wish that upon our worst enemy.

Norway 3 - 2 Iceland

Iceland have managed to qualify for their first ever major competition on the back of a fantastic qualifying campaign, and yet they conceded three goals to a poor Norway side and needed a late Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty to make the scoreline more respectable.

One team with one game remaining in their season, and one team that needed to avoid injury, much like both of Ireland's friendlies. Iceland's defence is a bit of a worry heading into the tournament as they have conceded 19 goals in their last 7 games.

Belgium 1 - 1 - Finland

Much like Sweden above, Belgium were crap in their most recent match as they were lucky to come away from Wednesday night's clash with Finland with a draw.

The amateur defending above (with similarities to Holland's goal in the Aviva Stadium) resulted in the opener for Finland, before Romelu Lukaku capitalised on some woeful defending to level the score.

Poland 1 - 2 Holland

What looked like a very weak Holland team went and got a cracking result in Poland to piss on their goodbye party before Euro 2016.

The Poles open against Northern Ireland and will be expected to qualify from that group along with Germany, but Georginio Wijnaldum hit the winner to dampen the optimism around their qualification somewhat.

Ireland aren't the only side who haven't played well in the pre-tournament friendlies, and if anything it's better to go in with expectations lowered after some questionable performance in meaningless games, than to go in with the expectation to keep a run of results going.

We're grand lads, breeze through the groups and then "anything can happen in the knockout stages"...
