Danielle De Rossi is an absolute legend.

A living legend of Italian football, we should say, as the man conducts himself with absolute class time and time again. The latest example of just what an incredible guy he is occurred last night, but before we do that let's look back on the last time we drew attention to De Rossi's incredible care for others back in March.

On Wednesday morning, De Rossi finished his training rather hurriedly and went off as if he had another important engagement. He went to Florence to attend the funeral of Pietro Lombardi, the former Italy kitman, who had passed away aged 92.

He left training in the morning and put his World Cup winner’s medal in his pocket before driving to Florence. There, he greeted his friend for the final time and put his most valuable possession into the coffin.

The latest? Showing what it means to be a true captain.

Last night AS Roma defeated Sassuolo 3-1, but in doing so lost their versatile star Alessandro Florenzi for up to six months as it became clear that he needs surgery on his ACL. Keep in mind that Roma have already lost Marco Rui and Antonio Rudiger for extended periods due to ACL injuries, and lost Kevin Strootman for all of last season too. The club seems cursed.

De Rossi, the great guy that he is, went with Florenzi to the hospital and stayed with his family offering them comfort and support until 4am this morning until they learned the extent of the injury.

Media captured footage of him leaving the hospital in the wee hours of the morning.

That's above and beyond the call of duty as a captain.

De Rossi is a living legend, along with Francesco Totti, as a one-club man who loves AS Roma above all else. Despite not starting regularly it is clear that he is still the heart and soul of the club.

There's shades of 'Remember The Titans' about that act from De Rossi, we still well up every time think about Gary Bertier.
