UFC 200 Is On The Horizon But McGregor's Team Are Eyeing Up Another Historic Fight

Diaz vs McGregor at UFC 200 is happening. There's too much money at stake for it not to happen. Dana White and co. will no doubt pack the show with as many title fights as possible but when it comes to the main event there won't be a title in sight. Granted, McGregor might be keen to ensure everyone knows he's till the featherweight champ but, in this case, even he'd have to accept that has absolutely no bearing whatsoever.

He's on a revenge mission. We've already seen how the negotiations for the fight have been nothing short of ludicrous with McGregor seemingly pushing for another fight at 170lb and Diaz wanting it at 155 but no matter what weight they're heading in to the Octagon at, it looks absolutely certain that McGregor's next fight will be on July 9th at the brand new Las Vegas Arena.

But that's not the only historic fight in mind for fans, or in fact for McGregor's team.

The ever-patient Frankie Edgar has long been suggested as the one who can be most aggrieved with how the McGregor steam-train has rode roughshod over the featherweight division. He deserves his shot and, regardless of what happens at UFC 200, he may well get it before 2016 is over judging by what Owen Roddy, McGregor's striking coach has been saying.

Roddy was speaking to Sky Sports today and he certainly didn't play down the fact that, after MMA was once again given free pass to be sanctioned in New York, Frankie Edgar may finally get his shot.

That would be amazing, realistically that would be huge for the first New York show. Madison Square Garden would be fantastic. At featherweight or even at lightweight. Frankie spends a lot of time there, and he was the lightweight champion. But if Conor is on the card, it would be huge anywhere.

That suggestion that McGregor could take Edgar back up to lightweight is particularly interesting. Any number of people have suggested that there's no way McGregor will want to endure another weight cut to 145. The featherweight belt is waiting to be vacated and Edgar may have to go up against Aldo once again if he really wants to get his hands on that title.

However, Roddy has also gone into detail about that much discussed weight cut and, according to him, the fact that McGregor has tipped the scales at 170, does not necessarily mean that we won't see him at featherweight once again.

He walks around at 172lbs. He packed on a bit of muscle but, the way he does it when he's in a camp for featherweight, he gets down to 163 or 160 fairly quick. He might drop some muscle weight in the process but he's always around 167lbs. He gets down to 163 early in the camp, limits his calories, then slowly but surely close enough to 154. Then he'll do the cut.

He's always done that. If he knows he's fighting at featherweight he'll get down to 145lbs, he always does. He's not a lot bigger than he usually is.

Whether that happens remains to be seen but, the truth of the matter is that, apart from Edgar, there's little left for him in the featherweight division at the moment but if he is going to defend that belt, taking on the New Jersey native in Madison Square Garden is about as enticing as it gets for McGregor and, in particular, for the UFC's matchmakers.
