Sunday Times journalist Jonathan Northcroft revealed tonight on BBC 5 Live that he was asked by Real Madrid not to mention Gareth Bale's transfer fee in an interview with the Welshman as it may offend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Northcroft was told by Madrid that mention of Bale's world record fee would upset Ronaldo:

Real Madrid are a club so worried about image that when I interviewed Bale it was requested to me, 'don't put in the article how much Gareth Bale cost as it would upset Cristiano.'

In terms of vanity there are fewer combinations that better Ronaldo and Real Madrid, and this its ultimate manifestation.
