The showpiece event of the NFL season is nearly upon us. This Sunday Las Vegas will play host to the 58th Super Bowl as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs. Here's everything you need to know about Super Bowl LVIII.

This is the first time that Las Vegas is hosting the conclusion of the NFL season, in the domed Allegiant Stadium. The venue holds a capacity of 65,000 and has been the home of the Las Vegas Raiders since its opening in 2020. The always eagerly anticipated halftime show will see Usher take centre stage in his first time appearing at the Super Bowl. His performance will begin in the early hours of Monday morning at around 1:15am (GMT).

The game is a repeat of the 2020 Super Bowl LIV in Miami where the Chiefs ran out 31-20 winners. The 49ers are appearing in their first final since that loss in the Hard Rock Stadium while the Chiefs are looking to retain the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time in their history after edging the Philadelphia Eagles last year.

The Teams

The San Francisco 49ers have a 5-2 record in Super Bowls and hope to record their 6th Super Bowl win on Sunday. If they achieve this feat they will become joint record winners of the Vince Lombardi Trophy along with the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Coach Kyle Shanahan, who was also at the helm for the loss in 2020, guided his team to a 12-5 record for the 2023 season. They also achieved a first round bye as well as number 1 seed in the NFC. The 49ers beat the Detroit Lions to reach the Super Bowl, they came back from 17 points down at halftime to win 34-31 with quarterback Brock Purdy integral in the win.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to win back to back Super Bowl's for only the 8th time in history. They have a 3-2 record in Super Bowls with 4 of those appearances coming in the last 5 years. Coach Andy Reid has won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs already, he was the victorious coach in the 2020 showdown.

The Chiefs ended the 2023 season with an 11-6 record, winning their 8th consecutive AFC West title against the Cincinnati Bengals and as the number 3 seed in the AFC. They beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 to book their spot in this years NFL showpiece with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce playing starring roles in the win.

When is Super Bowl LVIII?

San Francisco 49ers will play Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday 11th of February at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas. Kick off is at 11:30pm (GMT)

How to watch the Super Bowl in Ireland?

The game will be live on Sky Sports NFL with coverage beginning at 10pm. As well as this Virgin Media Two will have a live broadcast of the game with their coverage set to start at 10:45pm.
