Israel Olatunde set a new Irish U18 record for 60m at the Irish Life Health U20 and U23 Indoor Championships in Athlone over the weekend.

The 16-year-old, who runs for Louth club Dundealgan AC, ran 6.84 to win the U20 60m title.

The Dundalk sprinter bettered the previous mark of 6.96 set by Zak Irwin nearly six years. It was also just shy of Joseph Ojewumi's U23 title-winning time of 6.83.

Olatunde competed for Ireland in the 100m at last year's European's U18 Championships, making the semi-finals of the competition.

He is a sixth year student at St. Mary's College in Dundalk.
