Callum Walsh: 'There'll Definitely Be A Homecoming This Year'

In just under three years in professional boxing, Callum 'King' Walsh has certainly made quite a name for himself.

Walsh has been identified by many as one of the top boxing prospects in the world and is coached by Freddie Roach the famed trainer who worked with the likes of Manny Pacquiao and the Klitschko brothers. On top of this Walsh has gained a following from the UFC community after being backed by Dana White who has been present at a few of his fights. White has added Walsh's fights to the UFC Fight Pass channel and believes the Irish fighter to be a star in the making.

The Corkonian had his 10th professional bout in Madison Square Garden on St.Patrick's weekend fighting Kazakh Dauren Yeleussinov. Walsh recorded a 9th round knockout remaining undefeated. The Irish super welterweight cruised through the fight unscathed. He told Balls.ie he didn't have a mark on him after the fight.

Yeah after the fight I was perfect I didn't even have a mark on me.

I didn't even have any marks on my face I got back in the gym and back to work straight away.

However, Walsh holds himself to the highest of standards and was not overly pleased with his performance.

I feel it was an alright performance. Y'know I got the finish which I was happy with in the end, I got him outta there. But overall  I wasn't too impressed with my performance no.

I feel like I'm a lot better than what I showed. I still feel like I can do a lot better and I can show more of my skills. Y'know I'm only just after 10 fights so I'm gonna keep working on it, keep training, keep working hard and hopefully someday I can get out of the ring and actually be happy with my performance.

The 23-year-old was fighting in MSG for the 2nd time after fighting there in November.

The fight also broke the UFC Fight Pass ratings record for a boxing event. Walsh sensed the enormity of the occasion during fight week .

Yeah definitely there was a way different feel y'know. Especially with the whole week the whole build up there was a different feel and especially after fighting there in November and the going back so quick y'know in March.

I could feel a lot of people were excited for the fight . Anybody that was at my fight in November, it was a good fight we put on a good fight for the crowd and people were excited to come back and see a good night of fights.

Especially the Irish for St. Patrick's Day weekend. Yeah it was definitely a way better feeling this time.

Walsh's next fight has been slated for June 7th at the Chumash Casino in California. No opponent has been confirmed as of yet and Walsh is unbothered at who he will take on next.

The Cobh man has stated previously that he is fully focused on himself and disinterested by other top fighter's in the division. After climbing to 14th in WBC Super Middleweight World Rankings, his attention hasn't shifted.

Me and Freddie we work on stuff in the gym, we work on stuff I need to improve on. I think if I'm at my best there's nobody in the world that will beat me.  I try to focus on myself more than focusing on anybody else.

And looking at the rankings and all that stuff,  but sure the further I move up the rankings I'm gonna have to fight them anyway."

Over, the past couple months there have been rumblings about a potential homecoming fight. Walsh is sure that this is a real possibility but entrusts his team with the big decisions. As Walsh is a proud Corkman he would love the opportunity to fight in the home of Cork hurling in Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the future. However, he feels a smaller venue would serve a better purpose at this stage of his career.

I'd love to do Cork I'd love to do Páirc Uí Chaoimh but I dunno would we get what 50,000 people? I dunno will we get that many people for a homecoming this soon."

There'll definitely be a homecoming this year I can feel it happening. Everybody wants it, Dana White wants it, y'know I want it, Tom wants to go there it's just a matter of time

If the timings right and if we can do it, if we can get an arena and go and do it, I don't make the plans. So I don't know what they have in the works at the moment but I can guarantee they're working on something for this year and if they think it's the right thing to do and the right timing then we'll definitely go for this year."
