John Treacy did not sound confident when questioned about the future of Billy Walsh as Irish boxing head coach on the Ray D'Arcy Show.

When asked if Irish sports fans could expect a favourable result regarding Walsh, Treacy responded with a flat "I would hope, I would hope".

The Irish Sports Council CEO also said that he would be hugely disappointed if the coach did not agree a new contract and that he and others were 'trying their best' to effect a positive outcome.

It emerged last month that Walsh has been offered a role as head of the US women's programme - which reportedly comes with a salary dwarfing his current one.

Treacy also imparted that negotiations with Walsh are back on and that more should be known in the coming weeks.

Negotiations broke down at a particular stage but they are back on. I don't really want to comment on this, but let's just say that negotiations are back. We should probably know more in the next couple of weeks.

Walsh has been major factor in the numerous boxing medals which Irish fighters have accumulated in recent years.

Treacy explained what exactly the coach brings to the Irish setup.

He'd be a huge loss. He's the most winningest coach that we've had in Ireland. A spectacular man in the corner.

I see it very clearly as a high performance athlete from my former days. He brings a level of calmness to the boxer in the last two or three days before an event. He has that calming effect.

He's very good technically as well in terms of the analysis of who they're boxing against. He's excellent in the heat of battle.

You don't pick that off trees. He really is outstanding.
