Brandon Williams has completed a season-long loan move to Ipswich Town, where he will be managed by his former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna.

The right-back is someone who McKenna knows well from the Enniskillen man's time coaching the youth team at United, before both men were involved in the first-team under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Williams made his Man United breakthrough under the Norwegian, playing 50 times during the two pandemic-hit seasons, before heading to Ipswich's East Anglian rivals Norwich City on loan for the 2021/22 campaign.

He returned to Old Trafford in time for the start of Erik ten Hag's tenure in charge, but he failed to get a look-in last season, aside from a five-minute cameo in a 2-0 Carabao Cup fourth round victory over Burnley.

"Kieran was my youth team coach at United and from there we have had a great relationship," Williams told the Ipswich Town website about his reunion with McKenna.

"He has always had the standards of a coach at the top level and has had a big influence on me. He has always kept in touch with me to make sure I’m okay and I trust everything he says because he is great to learn off. I’m excited to work with him again.”

Kieran McKenna's success at Ipswich

McKenna has been a resounding success at Ipswich since joining the club just a month after Solskjaer was sacked by Man United in the winter of the 2021/22 season.

He steadied the ship for the remainder of that season, before guiding the Tractor Boys to promotion from League One at the end of his first full campaign in charge.

Ipswich are the early leaders in the EFL Championship this season, having won all of their opening three games, and are now among the favourites to gain promotion to the Premier League.
