In the large gamut of strange sporting injuries, there looks to be a new addition, with Brazil left back Marcelo suffering a back spasm during Brazil's last match for a particularly odd reason.

Marcelo had to be substituted ten minutes into his team's 2-0 victory over Serbia yesterday, and Brazil doctor Rodrigo Lasmar has since said that the muscle spasm that the Real Madrid full back felt during the game could've been a result of his sleeping arrangements:

It is still too early to make an accurate diagnosis. The injury may be related to the hotel mattress.

Although our expectation is good, but we have to be calm and wait for the next few days.

Dr. Lasmar has eased fears that Marcelo's injury will keep him out of his side's knockout tie against Mexico

Marcelo is medicated and with medication the tendency is that the response is good and that he can play. The important thing is that there is no injury.

They were muscle spasms. Once he feels good to train, he will return and immediately be ready to play. There is no recovery period.

Marcelo himself has also come out and assuaged reports that the injury will keep him out of the Brazil team writing the following on his Instagram account: “Thank you for your messages! Thankfully it was nothing serious and I’ll be back in no time! Very happy with the win!”

Brazil will take on Mexico in their last 16 match next Monday at 3pm in the Samara Arena, with fans looking forward to seeing Marcelo back in action, given he doesn't wake up on the wrong side of the bed again. Marcelo injury
