With Liverpool's season unravelling on the pitch in recent days, there also remains some doubts about the club's next steps away from the field of play.

Jurgen Klopp is quickly coming towards the end his time at Anfield, with the German set to depart in May. As of yet, it is not clear who will replace him.

Xabi Alonso was seen as the favourite early on in the process, although he has since revealed he will stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season. Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is currently considered the most likely appointment, although he recently admitted that he has not spoken to Liverpool about becoming their next manager.

With the search for the next Liverpool coach still ongoing, one unexpected name has emerged as a potential candidate.

According to Mail Sport, Niko Kovac is in the running to be appointed as the next Liverpool manager.

A 52-year old former Croatia international, Kovac has impressed during some of his managerial roles in the past. His first job in senior football came with Croatia, going on to lead Eintracht Frankfurt to a first major trophy in three decades in 2018.

He would join Bayern Munich that summer, although his spell in Bavaria was an odd one. Despite leading the club to a league and cup double during his first season in charge, he would leave the club by mutual consent a few months into the following campaign.

Since then, he has spent time at Monaco and most recently Wolfsburg. Kovac would be sacked by the latter back in March, a time when the club sat in 14th place in the league after an 11-game winless run.

His recent CV would certainly not suggest that he should be in the running for a job of the calibre of the Liverpool one. However, it is suggested that his representatives have sounded out the club about the prospect of him moving to Anfield this summer.

It remains to be seen how serious the interest from Liverpool would be, although you would imagine that Kovac is unlikely to be at the top of their list of preferred candidates.
