Report: Businessman Willing To Fund Wages For One Ireland Managerial Candidate

Over the coming weeks, it is likely that we will hear quite a few names linked with the Ireland managerial role.

It seems that there is already an established list of potential candidates, with the likes of Neil Lennon, Lee Carsley, Roy Keane, and Steve Bruce all said to be in the running for the position. As well as that, there is no doubt that a number of other coaches will come into the frame in the near future.

This is a huge decision for the FAI. Results on the pitch have been well short of the standard required over the last couple of years, and with the Association still on the hunt for a main sponsor for the men's team, an improvement in that area under a well-known coach would certainly help in that regard.

However, bringing in a manager with that sort of name recognition could potentially be difficult considering the FAI's financial constraints.

Arrangements have been made with third parties to pay part of the Ireland manager's salary in the past, something that is apparently on the table once again on this occasion.

The Irish Sun are reporting that an Irish businessman has offered to pay part of Steve Bruce's salary if he is appointed as Republic of Ireland manager. It is suggested that the offer was first made to the FAI in early October.

It is not said if the offer would be on the table for other potential candidates for the role.

Bruce has already admitted his interest in the position, saying before Kenny was let go that he would be open to speaking to the FAI should the position become available.

The former Manchester United defender came close to playing for Ireland during his career, qualifying through his Down-born mother. However, Alex Ferguson put a halt to the move at the time. His son Alex would later go on to represent both Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The links to Steve Bruce have been met with a mixed reaction, although he is the most experienced manager on the list of top candidates for the role. Neil Lennon also threw their hat into the ring at the weekend.

While quite a few supporters may not be certain on the 62-year old, it seems he is already receiving significant backing from some quarters.
