Darron Gibson has left Sunderland by mutual consent, the club have confirmed.

Sunderland announced the news this afternoon with an, er, brief statement.

Following the conclusion of his recent suspension, Darron Gibson will leave Sunderland AFC by mutual consent.

Gibson was suspended by the clubs two weeks ago having been charged with drink-driving on March 18th. On that morning, Gibson was arrested having crashed into a number of parked cars while his teammates were preparing for a midday Championship clash with Preston.

Today's news ends a torrid spell for Gibson at the club. Having been signed by David Moyes to supposedly more "British" qualities to their midfield, Gibson failed to make an impact on the field and was plagued with injury. Away from the pitch, he was furtively filmed by a supporter criticising some of his teammates. "There is too many people at the club who don't give a fuck [Lamine Kone] yes next one, [Jermain Lens] next one, [Wahbi Khazri] next one...I may be off my face in here but I still want to play for Sunderland and the rest of them fucking don't though".

Sunderland lie second-from-bottom in the Championship, three points from safety, but gave their battle for safety renewed vigour with a 4-1 victory over Derby County last night, in which Irish internationals John O'Shea and Aiden McGeady both scored.
