With their season now finished, Manchester United fans would have been hopeful that the club would be swift in making their next moves in the transfer market.

It will be a big summer for Erik ten Hag, who will want to build upon the successes of this season by closing the gap to Manchester City and making a run in the Champions League. Having a full pre-season to work with new signings would certainly help in that regard.

However, the early signs have not been encouraging.

Manchester United have been notoriously slow in wrapping up deals in recent seasons, often getting in long and drawn out negotiations when attempting to sign new players. Last summer was a prime example, with deals for Casemiro and Antony only finalised once the season had begun.

The same could be true this summer, especially as the ownership situation at the club remains uncertain.

Gary Neville surprised by one Erik ten Hag transfer target

A number of names have been linked with Manchester United in recent times, although Mason Mount is the one that seems the most realistic as things stand. It has been reported that United have already agreed personal terms with the Englishman, although Chelsea are said to be seeking a fee in the region of £70million to sanction any deal.

In saying that, not all are convinced about his potential signing. Quite a few of the club's supporters have been underwhelmed by the links, with one former player also taken aback by the rumours.

Speaking to the Metro, Gary Neville admitted he was 'surprised' that Erik ten Hag was so keen to sign Mason Mount considering the profile of the players he already has in his squad.

I am surprised about the Mason Mount one to be honest with you.

For the reported £60million fee… he is a very good player, that isn't a question for me. But I look at the players United have got already in terms of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Fred and Scott McTominay.

Do I think Mason Mount is the player to go in and sort all that out? I'm not quite sure. I think you would have been better off going and playing £100million plus on Jude Bellingham or £80-100million on Declan Rice and getting something you think can be the real thing.

Mason Mount would be a very good addition to Manchester United ’s squad, but it is a lot of money for a squad addition. Does Mount, Casemiro and Bruno work as a midfield three?

Spending £60million, you have got to get that jump towards winning the league from third place. Manchester United at this moment in time, they haven't got the money and they haven't got the promise of the new ownership to be able to throw the big money at players.

It remains to be seen if Manchester United will wrap up this deal, with Chelsea playing hardball when it comes to negotiations.

Erik ten Hag will be keen to get any business done as early as possible, although how committed the club are to such goals remains in doubt.
