Thomas Helmer is of course 49 years old today, the German sweeper who made his name at Bayern Munich in the 90's and who was sent back home after two games by Peter Reid's Sunderland -"his legs had gone". Helmer is best known for this "effort" from 1994, whereby he is awarded a goal even though the ball rebounds off his arse rather than crossing the actual line.
