James Maddison has given an exclusive interview to The Independent, and there's one line in it that's sure to have him cringing for the foreseeable future.

The Tottenham Hotspur summer signing has been one of the revelations of the early part of the Premier League season, scoring two goals and providing two assists for Ange Postecoglou's side as they have picked 10 points from a possible 12.

Maddison has always been a natural with the media, speaking confidently and articulately whenever asked, and that is no different with this latest interview, which was conducted with Rich Jolly while the 26-year-old has been away on England duty.

James Maddison wants to be the "main man" at roast dinners

"It’s not a conscious effort to try and be the showman," says Maddison. "That’s just how I am as a person, [when] I go for a roast dinner with my family, I like to be the main man.” when asked about his charismatic persona.

Of course, it was that last line that has taken off on social media, with hundreds of users ribbing the Spurs man with some brilliant reactions, inspired from the likes of Peep Show, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and even the classic Merseyside soap opera Brookside.

It was probably just a throwaway comment, but there's bound to be plenty of craic sent Maddison's way at the England camp since the interview went public.

He's always shown himself to be a good-humoured lad though, with the below clip from last weekend being a case in point, and it would be no surprise if he's now cooking up a response to the situation

Keep an eye out for any roast dinner-related goal celebrations should Maddison find the net in England's Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Saturday.
