Jamie Carragher Speaks Nothing But Sense Over The Wayne Rooney Drinking Controversy

Monday Night Football has oddly featured a host of largely crap games over the last few weeks: tonight's headline event was West Brom's shellacking of Burnley. Perhaps the reason behind such low-key games is the fact that Sky are confident that the quality of the programme around the game is enough to pull in viewers allowing the bigger games to compensate for the broadcasts led by Thierry Henry.

Chris Coleman appeared alongside Jamie Carragher tonight, and once again, the show delivered. From an Irish point of view, Coleman offered an interesting insight into how Wales are likely to set up against us in Dublin next March.

It was during the final few minutes of the broadcast when Carragher hit his stride.

The twitter Q&A is usually compelling viewing, even when deprived of the Carragher/Neville b****r. The controversy surrounding Wayne Rooney getting drunk in the team hotel bar came up, and Carragher offered an utterly perfect riposte to Rooney's critics, while also arguing a very informed and passionate defence of Rooney.

Carragher took aim at the FA's failure to protect Rooney, and to stop the seeming ceaseless flow of leaks to the press. This is really brilliant from Carragher, with Coleman adding an excellent postscript too from his point of view as an international manager.
