Jamie Carragher and Richard Keys have exchanged a war of words after the former Liverpool defender's comments on the England management position.

As the post-mortem from England's exit from the World Cup continues, the future of Gareth Southgate remains a question.

While England have shown huge progress under Southgate, this talented group of players fell short once again in a major tournament when facing tough opposition. The defeat to France will have been particularly hard to accept given how well England played.

If Gareth Southgate feels his time is up as manager, there will be no shortage of options for the job. Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Brendan Rodgers are among the names linked.

However, Jamie Carragher made his feelings on the issue clear, as he claimed "The England manager should ALWAYS be English" in a tweet this morning.

Jamir Carragher's stance is one that has been popular with the British public since the dismissal of Fabio Capello in 2012.

While Carragher may not have been expecting everyone to agree with him, he probably didn't expect to get involved in an argument with is Richard Keys.

The former Sky sports presenter accused Jamie Carragher of racism for his opinion on the next England manager, claiming England should pick the best candidate available.

What sort of nonsense is this? It borders on racism. The England coach should be the pert person available. England should not hide behind closed borders."

This is of course not what Carragher was referring to when he made the comments on the next England manager being from England.

Many of the top nations in world football have managers from their own country, as they have proven to implement a style of play and understands the country's footballing history and ambitions.

The war of words didn't stop there, as Carragher had the last word when he responded to Keys comments. The Sky pundit made reference to Keys blogs, which have been full of controversial opinions

It borders on racism. I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalist who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for sky!

You are a sad desperate man. Ps love the blogs."

Definitely a war of words we weren't expecting today. While Southgate is under contract until the 2024 European Championships, the coming days will likely reveal his future.
