With Stephen Kenny now removed from the position, the FAI will be carefully considering their next move as they look to appoint his successor as Ireland manager.

Quite a few options have been suggested. It is thought that Lee Carsley is Association's preferred candidate as things stand, with the likes of Neil Lennon, Roy Keane, Steve Bruce, and Gus Poyet also linked with the role.

That is hardly the most inspiring list of potential replacements, especially when you consider that it has been said that Carsley is reluctant to leave his role as England U21 manager.

John Giles sees Steve Bruce as standout Ireland managerial candidate

This will be a massive decision for the FAI, who will need to appoint the right manager in order to bring this team forward after some disappointing results over the last couple of years.

Of the names available, John Giles would select a rather controversial one.

Speaking on Off The Ball, the Ireland legend said that Steve Bruce would be his choice out of the candidates that have been linked with the role.

If I had to put my favourite down of that crowd, I think it would be Steve Bruce.

I think he did an exceptionally good job at Newcastle under very very difficult circumstances. I think his temperament is good, he was a very good player himself.

Any time I've heard him on the television talking about football, he has always made sense. I wouldn't be backing him backing him, I would hate to put my life on picking a successful manager...

Of the group that I've heard mentioned, I would probably give it to him.

That would no doubt be a controversial appointment among Ireland supporters, with the links to Steve Bruce having been widely disparaged in recent days. The Englishman has confirmed his interest in the job in recent days.

John Giles admits that he himself would be far from convinced with the appointment, pointing towards the conundrum that the FAI are currently facing.

If Ireland are to get out of their current slump, they need to get this appointment right.
