Christmas Day Mexican League Final Descends Into Chaos In Extra Time

Festive cheer between Tigres and Club America was in short supply as the two met in the Liga MX final second leg on Christmas Day.

The game was tied at 1-1 after the first leg on Thursday.

After 90 minutes of football deadlocked at 0-0, the game went to extra time. Edson Álvarez gave Club America the lead in the 95th minute.

Tigres were already down to ten players at that stage after Jorge Torres saw red for a second yellow card towards the end of normal time. Club America captain Rubens Sambueza would also see red for a second yellow card seven minutes after Alvarez had given America the lead.

It was then that chaos broke out as players from both sides clashed. The schemozzle resulted in the game finishing nine vs nine as Paolo Goltz of Club America and Jose Rivas of Tigres were both sent-off. Club America's Ventura Alvarado, who was on the bench at the time, was also sent-off.

The drama was far from over, though. Jesús Dueñas popped up with a late equaliser to make it 1-1 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

Tigres could go on to win the penalty shootout 3-0, giving them the Apertura title.
