The League of Ireland and Love Island, it's not a crossover we thought we would be seeing anytime soon.

While Ireland's domestic league is becoming increasingly popular, we assumed it would be a while until it broke through on the UK's biggest reality television show. However, the two have now become intertwined after a new bombshell entered the villa.

Rumours began to circulate last week that a League of Ireland player would be appearing on the show, with plenty of speculation as to their identity. It was finally revealed a couple of days ago that Shelbourne goalkeeper Scott van der Sluis would be joining the cast.

This led to some hilarious comments from his former manager Damien Duff:

I was shocked and saddened that Scott chose a villa in Mallorca full of beautiful single women over myself, the staff and the players.

All jokes aside, I thank Scott for his services to Shelbourne FC and we all wish him the very best for the future, whatever that holds.

The Welshman would make his first appearance on Love Island during last night's episode, with Shelbourne quickly becoming part of the conversation.

Scott went on a date with fellow contestant Jess during last night's episode, with the conversation turning to his football career.

When he told her what club he most recently played for, it did lead to a bit of confusion.

Jess: You're a footballer yeah?

Scott: I'm a footballer, yeah.

Jess: What team do you play for?

Scott: I play for a team called Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.

Jess: I can't say I've heard of Sherborne or whatever it is.

It's fair to say that she hasn't been a regular at Tolka Park.

The Shelbourne Twitter account couldn't help but respond to the comment.

Scott van der Sluis never made a League of Ireland appearance for Shelbourne after joining the club in the summer of 2022, although he did feature in a few Leinster Senior Cup games.

He will be hoping to have a bit more success in the Love Island villa.
