O'Neill And Dunphy: A Killer Analysis Team In The 1980s

Nostalgia at its most exquisite here as Eamon Dunphy and new Ireland manager Martin O'Neill appear together on BBC NI to analyse a World Cup qualifier match between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

The match ended 0-0 but it was Charlton's men who enjoyed the better of the chances and indeed could have scored if it weren't for current Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill clearing the ball of the line.

Dunphy was much more mellow back then, and was quite optimistic about the Republic of Ireland side. He saved special praise for newbie Tony Cascarino, whom he described as 'a surprise and a benefit, and I think he's going to be there for a long time.'

Both O'Neill and Dunphy sported the curliest of hair, with Dunphy deciding to go for the baggy suit look. Earlier in the night, at half-time, O'Neill joked about how Eamon doesn't rate Mick McCarthy as a central defender and indeed Dunphy then described him as 'a flaw and a weakness.'

Again, the analysis starts at 47 minutes in.

Funnily enough Dunphy spoke in an interview with the Second Captains just last week about how he felt he was too easy on McCarthy prior to Euro '88 and wasn't vociferous enough in his calls for David O'Leary to start in McCarthy's place.

Massive thanks to Colm for alerting us to this gem on Twitter.
