Newcastle were dealt a massive blow to their hopes of progressing in the Champions League, after a poor penalty call from the referee gave PSG a draw in the 98th minute of their Pool F clash.

Alexander Isak had given the English club the lead with his 24th minute tap-in, and while Newcastle rode their luck throughout the match, it seemed as though they would nab a famous win to put the in second place and a point ahead of PSG with one game remaining.

It was not to be, however, with VAR sending referee Szymon Marciniak to the pitch side monitor for a penalty review.

Despite the fact that the ball clearly hit Tino Livramento's chest first, and the fact that his hands were low and the ball was not heading towards goal after Ousmane Dembele's cross, the ref pointed to the spot before Kylian Mbappe converted.

The football world united in outrage at the decision, with Alan Shearer calling it 'disgusting' and 'a load of shit'.

"I'm still coming to terms with it," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said after the game.

"I feel really flat but at the same time really pleased with what the players gave today. Their commitment, execution... We rode our luck. We ran out of luck at the end. I didn't think it was a penalty.

"What you don't take into account with those replays is how quick the ball goes. It hits his chest first. If it hits his hands first, well it's still not a penalty because he's so close. But you can make more of a case.

"It's not a penalty when it hits his chest first and then hits his hand which is low. I'm not allowed to sum it up. I can't say my inner thoughts obviously [I'd get in trouble].

"I thought the referee was having a good game up until this moment. He had been strong."
