During they heyday in the Premier League era, there was a sense that many teams were already beaten before they even took to the pitch to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

They were a formidable outfit during the time Alex Ferguson was in charge, so much so that it felt like they were almost unbeatable at times at their own ground. The club's home record up until the Scot's retirement was exemplary, although that has all changed in recent years.

Opposition sides now go to Old Trafford not only with the belief that they could get something from the game, but that they could also dominate the hosts.

Roy Keane aims ultimate insult at current Manchester United team

Roy Keane was the leader of the Manchester United team in the 90s and early 00s, one that demanded the highest standards from themselves in every fixture. That is quite the contrast to the current group of players at the club.

Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast in association with Sky Bet, the Cork man aimed the ultimate insult at the current group of Manchester United players and coaches by claiming they had made Old Trafford an enjoyable place for opposition teams to come and play football.

They [Manchester United] don’t really play as a team I don’t know if they are [the players] just taking on the manager’s ideas.

When you look at Manchester United, we say it every week, you don’t know what you are going to get. I watched their game last week against Wigan Athletic and you’re thinking, they’ll certainly dominate Wigan and score four, five goals and even then, they had to get a penalty to get over the line. They weren’t great in possession.

The other night, against Spurs, you look at the second goal, just one or two passes and it was a goal. It’s as if they are not athletic enough – and I think there’s obviously an element of fear from the team, they go, we are better sitting in.

And there is nothing wrong with sitting in if you are doing brilliant going forward, but they are not scoring the goals to back that up.

They are stuck between a rock and a hard place because again, you are Manchester United, the onus is even when you’re at home, flex your muscles, and more importantly put fear in their opponents' mindsets.

But teams are playing Manchester United now and there is no fear anymore. I think teams are going to Old Trafford now and enjoying it!

Considering the standards previously set at the club, claiming Old Trafford is an easy place to visit could be viewed as the ultimate insult from someone such as Roy Keane. That is certainly not something you would have associated with the successful Manchester United teams of the past.

Erik ten Hag has now been at the club for more than 18 months, with the team still having no clear playing philosophy or cohesion on the pitch. That is a damning indictment on him as a manager.

With a new minority owner now in place, you get the sense that it is a situation that will not be allowed to continue for much longer.
