Stephen Kenny remains confident that he will stay on as Ireland manager for the remainder of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

That is despite a fourth defeat from five group games this evening at the hands of The Netherlands at the Aviva Stadium.

Ireland took an early lead thanks to Adam Idah's penalty, but just over fifteen minutes later Cody Gakpo equalised from the spot.

The decisive goal game from Wout Weghorst in the 56th minute and in truth Kenny's men failed to create any major chances in the final half hour, as the Ronald Koeman's side left Dublin with a 2-1 victory.

Ireland now face Greece and Gibraltar in October, before closing out the campaign at away to the Dutch in November.

Questions will continue to be raised about the manager's future but for now it seems that he believes he will take charge of those games.

Stephen Kenny reacts to latest defeat

"You do need to get results," a crestfallen Kenny told Tony O'Donoghue after the game.

"We're absolutely gutted that we haven't won there. To beat one of the best teams in Europe you have to see out those difficult periods and we didn't do that for the second goal.

"We've got two matches in October...after that it will certainly not be my decision. We'll have to see whether we have the play-off in March which there's still a chance of.

"I think the players gave everything tonight. In the first half they were absolutely excellent, they deserved to be in front at half-time.

"France are the best team in the world. Holland there tonight are one of the best teams in Europe. We're missing four or five of our best players tonight, forwards who we're building our team around.

"It is what it is. We gave everything but we came up short."

Despite his optimism, the future of Stephen Kenny as Ireland boss is very much out of his hands.
