A return to Liverpool, one day, for Steven Gerrard - most likely in a coaching capacity - was always on the cards.

However, a role for him at Liverpool - possibly a playing one - could be opening up sooner than expected.

According to the London Independent, Gerrard has had several phone conversations with new Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp regarding a possible return.

Klopp believes that Gerrard's presence on the training ground would help bring about the type of professionalism which he wants to see at Melwood.

At the moment, the midfielder would only be allowed to train with Liverpool until January 15th and not play. LA Galaxy are unwilling to allow a loan - similar to the ones used with Robbie Keane and David Beckham in the past - which would let Gerrard play for his old club.

The possibility of a permanent return has not been discounted though, this would mean Liverpool paying a transfer fee for the player who spent 16 years at Anfield.

LA Galaxy's MLS season is already over, with elimination from the playoffs coming in the first round at the hands of the Seattle Sounders.
