Watch: Michael Owen Explains Why Man Utd Need 'Old Head' Carrick

Someone who takes a hell of a lot of stick for his pundit work is former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen.

And to be honest, it's largely justifiable, as earlier this week he was again arguing that Jamie Vardy was not a natural finisher and most of his goals were just 'closing his eyes and hitting it', but Manchester United fans might be surprised to find themselves fully agreeing with Owen's views on Michael Carrick.

The veteran midfielder is still an important player, a point amplified by the fact that the team has won all four games in which he has started, but fans and former players alike are clearly frustrated that he is not featuring enough.

Speaking on BT Sport's Europa League highlights show, Owen expressed his disbelief at the role Carrick currently has, and outlined why the Englishman should be starting whenever possible.

Julien Laurens nodding in agreement regarding Pogba, when you consider how well the Frenchman performed with someone like Andrea Pirlo or Claudio Marchisio sitting and doing the "dirty work", it reinforces Owen's point.

Regardless of what he has said before or what you may or may not think of him as a pundit, he certainly has a point there.

You would think that having not played midweek that Carrick was being rested for Swansea, but should he not earn a place in the starting lineup on Sunday you'd have to feel there will be a lot of pissed off United fans.
