Wayne Rooney was the special guest in the BBC studio on Saturday, as his former side Manchester United prepared to play local rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Rooney was a key part of the United side which shared an intense rivalry with City after the Sky Blues were bought by the Abu Dhabi Group in 2008.

Across a three-year period from 2010 to 2013, the sides would trade Premier League titles, while also meeting in the semi-final stage of both domestic cup competitions.

Rooney was on the scoresheet in many of those games, but a young City team would soon become the dominant force in Manchester.

One star of that City side was full-back Micah Richards, who was alongside Rooney, Gary Lineker, and Alan Shearer in the studio at Wembley on Saturday.

Ahead of the latest iteration of the Manchester derby, Rooney and Richards reminisced on the days of their rivalry of the early 2010s. One story from the United legend about Richards had the entire BBC studio in uproarious laughter.

Wayne Rooney takes aim at Micah Richards with hilarious story

Host Gary Lineker asked Wayne Rooney and Micah Richards whether they ever ran into each other around the city of Manchester during the early days of City's rise to the top.

The pair said they had come across each other in the city - before Rooney hilariously threw his compatriot under the bus.

Rooney revealed that he had once come across Richards "celebrating" with a group of friends in a city centre restaurant. The Manchester United man was surprised to learn what it was Richards was celebrating.

I saw Micah in Wing's Chinese Restaurant. I was in there with my family for a quiet meal.

Micah came in with about 20 of his guys...they're celebrating so I said, 'what are you celebrating?'

Micah had made his 50th Premier League appearance! What's he doing?!

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker were cracked up by Rooney's story, with the nature of Richards' celebration catching them both unawares.

Richards defended himself, justly saying that to play that many games at Premier League level was a major achievement.

However, it's easy to understand why someone like Wayne Rooney, who won so many trophies with Manchester United, would find it hard to understand.

Rooney was announced on Saturday as the new manager of Plymouth Argyle, his first job in football after a disastrous spell in charge of Birmingham City earlier this season.
