O'Neill, who stepped down as Kildare manager during the summer after four years in charge, works in Cork as head of the Sports, Leisure and Childhood Studies department at CIT.

Cork GAA has also announced that Kevin Smith will join McCarthy's backroom team as strength and conditioning coach.

Smith was previously head of S&C at Top 14 rugby side Stade Francais. He will work under Cork's new high performance director Aidan O'Connell.
