The teammates of ATU Sligo honoured the late Ella O’Neill, who passed away last Friday, by singing a tribute to her pitchside this afternoon after they won the Moynihan Cup Final in Munster Technology University Cork.

Ladies Gaelic Football shared the tribute of Travelling Soldier online, which was recorded by Jerome Quinn Media.

The Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo Ladies Football Team sang emotionally, side by side following their win.

Ella passed away on Friday, March 1, and tributes poured in from football and camogie teams nationwide.

A minute's silence was also dedicated to the young player before her team went on to become the HEC champions against MIC Limerick with a full-time score of 1-10 to 1-08.

As a mark of respect, Ella was named on the matchday programme wearing the number two jersey.

Ella O’Neill hailed from Clashmore in Waterford and played for Drum Rangers. The talented footballer captained Waterford at underage level and also excelled with the Modeligo camogie team.

ATU Sligo GAA club and Waterford LGFA are among those to have paid tribute to Ella in recent days.

“Sincere condolences to Ella’s family, friends, her ATU St Angelas classmates, and her teammates on our ATU Sligo Ladies Football team,” ATU Sligo GAA Club wrote on social media.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

“Waterford LGFA would like to extend our sincere condolences to Ella’s family, JJ, Josephine, Darragh, and Aoife, as well as her extended family, friends, and teammates. Ella represented both her club and county on the field of play with great distinction,” the Déise added.

“May she rest in peace.”

It may only be for a while, but this victory might help bring some happiness after the bereavement.
