Daithí Regan, who has been cutting about Galway in the past, was adamant they have the potential to win an All-Ireland.

However, he says they cannot do it by sticking to an orthodox, 15 v 15 gameplan. They can't match Kilkenny under those conditions.

Speaking on Off the Ball tonight, he said they need to go down either the Clare or the Waterford route.

Galway's failure to reach the summit has its roots in tactical naivety. Micheal Donoghue is only in the Galway job since late last year. While they did suffer relegation this year, his reign has hardly been calamitous thus far. One might fairly assume he deserves more time to get the team motoring properly.

However, Daithí is adamant that Galway need to go headhunting for one man. Anthony Daly has the charisma and, more importantly, the tactical astuteness to find the right formula for Galway.

Galway have the ability, the players and the talent. But tactics-wise they are nowhere near where Clare are at. People need to remember what Clare did to Kilkenny in the league semi-final. They did what Galway, with all their ability, couldn't do. And I believe that Anthony Daly is the man to do it.

Daly's reputation as a tactician rests largely on his time as Clare manager, where, though he won no titles, he almost toppled Kilkenny in the 2004 quarter-final and All-Ireland champions Cork in the 2005 semi-final. At Dublin, he lifted them from the hurling backwaters to national league glory in 2011 and a Leinster championship in 2013.
