Davy Burke Calls Out 'Toxic' Treatment Of Roscommon Star After Kerry Incident

Roscommon capped off a disappointing league campaign over the weekend, with their 2-19 to 1-9 defeat at the hands of Derry condemning the county to relegation from Division 1 of the Allianz National Football League.

The Rossies entered this season with hopes of building off a strong display in 2023, where they produced a third-placed finish. However, they would manage only one win and a draw on this occasion, losing their final three games on the spin.

It has been a difficult campaign for Davy Burke's side, who were also at the centre of some controversy after their defeat against Kerry on St Patrick's Day. In the aftermath of that game, Cathal Heneghan was criticised for a possible stamp on Kerry's Jason Foley, who would come off injured later in the match.

Heneghan would receive a one-match ban on the back of the incident.

Kerry manager Jack O'Connor would confirm over the weekend that Jason Foley's injury against Roscommon was not related to the incident involving Cathal Heneghan, with his player instead getting injured at a later point in the game.

Speaking to the Roscommon Herald after the loss to Derry, Davy Burke would call out the 'toxic' treatment that Heneghan was subjected to in the days that followed that game.

Social media is a massive problem. I would have pulled Cathal aside during the week.

It’s not a nice place to be, particularly for a 23 or 24-year old. It’s rotten, it’s toxic. Something has to be done about it.

Cathal absolutely didn’t mean it. Yes, he stood on Jason Foley’s leg.

He took his suspension and we’ll move on but it’s terrible the way these people on social media can disrespect a player and drag him through the mud like that.

Roscommon will have some time to reflect on their disappointing league campaign over the next few weeks, with Burke's man not out in championship until April 21st when they will take on New York or Mayo.

Cathal Heneghan will be available for that fixture after serving his one-game suspension against Derry.
