In his autobiography, Jim McGuinness made the uncomfortable revelation that the Donegal players had backed themselves at 10/1 to beat Dublin in the 2014 All-Ireland football semi-final.

The Donegal players will not face disciplinary action over their punt. For, as the Indo confirms today, the GAA merely frowns upon players betting upon their own games. Their is no rule outlawing it.

It's far from uncommon for players to back themselves to win championship games.

In 1995, Clare used the money given to them for a session to back themselves to win the Munster title.

Here are the GPA's guidelines on the matter.

As a player, mentor, or official with a unique insight into team selection, tactics, form, or insider information, the best recommendation is to never bet on a competition your team is involved in.

Legislation in Ireland (Republic) and Northern Ireland outlines severe consequences relating to any potential match-fixing or abuse of insider knowledge, with penalties including a fine and/or imprisonment.

Presumably, if they had backed themselves to lose.
